How to Protect Your Eyes When Using a Computer

When using a computer for a longer duration, it is important you avoid straining your eyes. When your eyes strain continuously, you will begin to develop long-term vision problems. Here are key steps you need to take.

Minimize Glare

Light emitted by a computer screen usually makes the eye muscles to work harder, as they try to accommodate the blue wavelengths. Prolonged exposure can overwork these muscles and cause eyestrain and headache. Install an anti-glare system In your computer to minimize the amount of light reaching your eyes. There are several software that allow you to select less bright colors for the screen. Most of them come as add-ons in Chrome, Mozilla and Internet Explorer.

Eye Focus

If your work involves sitting in front of a computer for a long time, you need to take a break after every 20 minutes. Prolonged exposure to the bright light coming from the computer will increase tension in your eye muscles. You can walk around the room or look at far away objects.

Avoid Using Your Computer in a Dark Room

Some of us are addicted to computers and smartphones. We are so addicted to the extent we find ourselves glued to them during bedtime. This is very dangerous because the blue light from these devices can lead to transient blindness. This is a rare condition that causes the retina to detach from the back of the eye, resulting in blindness. Do not use your computer or smartphone one hour before going to bed.

Wear Protection Glasses

You can buy eye protection glasses if you are unable to take breaks when working. Eyeglasses are designed to reduce glare and maximize what you see through the lenses. This makes it easier for you to stare at a computer screen for a longer period. You can choose glasses with anti-reflective coatings or those with color tints. Anti-reflective glasses reduce the glare deflected from the screen. The color-tinted glasses increase the contrast in the screen and filter out undesirable sharp light so that your eye muscles can relax. You can get both types of glasses at Felix Gray

Sit Properly

The way you sit when working on a computer could be the reason why you have tired eyes. In some cases, the screen may be either above or below your eye level. Due to the imbalanced position between your body and the screen, your eye muscles are bound to strain. Use a stand to raise the screen to your eye level. If the computer is above your eye level, raise your chair or use a shorter stand.

Sleep Well

Having enough sleep is the key to a healthy body and mind. If you can’t sleep, your eyes will become fatigued and more sensitive. Sleeping for seven to eight hours gives your eye muscles enough time to relax and refresh. If you are having trouble sleeping, you need to find the root cause of the problem because it largely affects your eyes.

Parting Shot

The eyes play an important role in your body. They help you to see, display emotions and communicate. It is very important you take care of them so that they can continue to serve you better. Avoid staring at computers for too long, wear protective glasses, sleep well and adopt the right posture when sitting.
